Speech and Language




Read colorful books (again and again)

Model appropriate speech sounds at all times for your child

Repeat your child’s comments with corrected speech/syntax

(ie:  Johnny says, “Me want tookie.”  Mom responds, “I want a cookie.”)

Model appropriate syntax and grammar for your child

Have your child read books to you

Speak simply, slowly, and clearly to your child

Recite nursery rhymes

Talk about everything you are doing when your with him/her

Praise your child for any and all efforts to speak clearly

Practice speech skills in front of a mirror to emphasize accuracy

If you ask your child to repeat sounds, words, sentences, limit it to 3 trials regardless of accuracy to reduce your child’s and your frustration

Be a good speech model

Talk to your child

Read to your child
